Hardware and software for LEARNING Impairments
Mathematics
This chapter includes software programs for mathematics, including basic and higher math skills.
Adventures in Math
Adventures in Math lets students in grades 3-4 find their way through a maze of rooms and passageways ina castle. The play alone or against a friend - solving problems to open doors, collect treasure and find their way out of the castle - all while battling spiders and dragons. For each problem solved, students get points. Adventures in Math offers a challenge on five different skill levels. Students begin by solving problems on the easiest level and, as they solve more problems, progress to more difficult levels. Adventures in Math tests addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, either singly or with combinations of problems.

Arcademic Skill Builders in Math
Part arcade and part academic, Arcademic Skill Builders incorporates meteors, lasers, spaceships, alligators and green slime to drill and reinforce basic math. The kit contains six programs; each employs a motivation game format. The object is to destroy an arithmetic problem by typing in a correct answer before players are destroyed. While themes and graphics change, all the programs operate according to the same set of rules. Students solve simple problems; options allow users to determine the speed of the approaching problems and the run time of the game.

Basic Math Competency Skill Building
Thses programs make use of the computer’s graphic, branching and interactive capabilities. An objective-based math skill classification helps the teacher assign material appropriate to need and level. Problems are randomly generated. Students control the pace. An interactive tutorial precedes each lesson; students repeat it as often as necessary before going to the practice problems. The computer monitors student work, branches to remediation and interactively guides them to the solution. The program branches to extra practice. A quiz gives final assessments of comprehension. The management system automatically records students’ quiz grades on each level of difficulty.

Mathematics: Solving Story Problems
This tutorial program offers assistance in developing strategies for solving story problems. Skills in the program are those most commonly taught in levels three through eight, and the strategies are based on the Polya. Four-Step Problem Solving model. The steps are: getting to know the problem, completing a plan to solve the problem, solving the problem and looking back at the problem. Wen students answer an item incorrectly, exercises refocus their attention on the problem-solving processes. Survey tests based on the research of the Iowa Problem Solving Project diagnose weaknesses and assess progress. Record-keeping is a feature.
